"How antimicrobial cathelicidins participate in orchestrating mucosal innate immunity during infectious colitis"

This seminar uncovers mechanisms by which cathelicidin, known primarily as an endogenous antimicrobial peptide, plays a pivotal role as an innate regulator of colonic epithelium and goblet cell biology, regulating the secretion of mucin and specific goblet cell associated proteins and sensing bacterial virulence factors. These new roles for cathelicidin in the setting of infectious colitis was studied using cultured colonic epithelial cell lines (in vitro), colonoids murine colonoids (ex vivo), and mice lacking the cathelicidin gene (Camp-/-) and their wild-type (Camp+/+) littermates challenged by the murine enteropathogen, Citrobacter rodentium. This innate immune action of cathelicidin in the colonic mucosa seems to occur at concentrations lower than those necessary for anti-microbial activity and in conjunction with previous published manuscripts (Holani et al. 2020, Gut Microbes PMID 32658599, Holani et al. 2023, J Innate Immunity PMID 36116427) reveals the importance of cathelicidin biology to sense pathogens and predispose innate defense despite of antimicrobial activity.
